It was in February of 2011 that my mom was diagnosed with something called primary peritoneal cancer (PPC), which is a direct cousin to ovarian cancer--a very aggressive form of cancer. There are hereditary links to it. I'd never heard of the BRCA mutation before this, and after my mom was diagnosed, her genetic counselor called the entire family in--my siblings, myself, my mother's siblings, and her only living parent--her mom--and we were all tested for this genetic mutation. I have it, both of my brothers have it--they're identical twins, as well as one of my mother's sisters. It wasn't until she was diagnosed that we even started to learn about this genetic mutation.
