The odds of getting breast and/or ovarian cancer with a BRCA mutation--the experts really range on this; no one knows exactly what it is--but statistics range anywhere from 50% up to 88%. The genetic counselor that I met with strongly recommended that I take a closer look at this, because his feeling, as a breast surgeon, is that my odds due to my family background and the hereditary gene was up to about 87% for breast cancer and over 50% for ovarian cancer.
