We're huge proponents of backyard gardening. It does so many wonderful things. You can know what goes into the soil, what goes into the fruits and vegetables you're feeding. And of course you can get your kids involved, so it helps with food literacy. Many children, unfortunately, in modern America think food is made somewhere in the back of a supermarket, and a garden can get rid of that myth.
The good news is that there are not yet genetically engineered fruits and vegetables out there, although a genetically engineered apple may soon come into the marketplace. So right now you can feel pretty safe if you're planting fruits and vegetables that you can avoid GMOs. But again, in your purchases, the key right now is that you can't do much. The only way that you can actually know whether you're getting the foods that are non-GMO is if it's organic, or if it has the non-GMO verified label on it.
Otherwise, we are really shopping blind. If you go to the JustLabelIt.org there's a hilarious video of a family eating together with blindfolds on. And that's really how we're all eating.
I fear that we will have the day very soon when fruit and vegetable seeds are genetically engineered. And the only way we can really put a stop to that is to telegraph a message to the retailers and our legislators that we don't want that. Or at least we want the choice. And the only way we're going to get that is labeling.
So that's why people should go to JustLabelIt.org and register their desire to have their right to know. We have a petition that's gone before the FDA. 1.4M people have signed it. But we need to get that petition up into the 3-4-5M. Every person can help us to win this fight.
