A working mom’s day-to-day, I think a lot of it is setting realistic expectations, and so I think the first thing you need to realize is it’s going to be chaos, I mean there’s no way around it, it’s going to be chaos. You can do some things to eliminate the chaos, you can prep the night before, pack lunches, layout clothes so you have a smoother transition; but just accept, if you’re a working mom, your life is going to be chaotic.
The second thing, as a working mom that you need to recognize is you’re going to have to make choices. Inevitably, your board meeting and your kid’s field trip are going to happen on the same day, and recognize that some days you’re going to make choices that favor your family, and some days you’re going to make choices that favor your work and it all evens out at the end.
And the last tip for working moms – And this is great advice that I have read recently in the New York Times is, when you leave the house in the morning, don’t apologize to your kid about going to work, don’t say to your child, “I’m sorry, mommy would rather stay home and play with you.” Tell them, “I’m lucky I get to go to work and if you work really hard, you’re going to have a great job like me one day.” It sets a positive association with work for them, something that they’re going to spend a really long time doing, and set them off on the right path.
