My name is Dr Stuart Siegel, and I'm the director of the children's center for cancer and child disease at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. As well as a professor of the University of Southern California School of Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics. I'm a pediatric hematologist-oncologist, which means that I take care of children of all ages. From infants, toddlers, young children, teenagers and young adults who have cancer or blood diseases. All types. From cancers of the brain through cancers of the bone marrow to other forms of blood disorders and cancers. I provide therapy to them. I plan their treatment. I follow them up after they're treated. And, to me, that has been a great honor, particularly, since I've had the great luck of being in this profession during a time of amazing progress. Going from survivals, in childhood cancer, from 10 or 20% during my professional lifetimes to figures that are better than 80% now. So, that's been a great joy to me. To really focus on the improvement of survival. As I often like to say, when I started out my carrier in this field, mainly, unfortunately, I've spent most of my time preparing children and their families for death. Now, I spend most of my time preparing them for life. And let me tell you, that's a lot better than it was before. I'm married to a wonderful wife Barbara who is a, was a top lawyer in the legal aid area. Particularly helping families achieve health insurance who didn't have the resources to do so, or being denied doing that. I have a wonderful son Josh. And two grandsons Elijah and David, who live in Northern California. And, who are the most important things in my life along with my life. I have interesting passions and hobbies. And, my two biggest ones are really an unseemly combo. Hockey and opera. And you might say, "What's the common denominator there? Well, it's passion. Both of them are passionate activities. And, I love the passion of hockey. I love the passion of opera. I also do a fair amount of traveling. I'm getting more involved in international programs, so I love to visit different people, learn about different cultures. And, understand how they think. Because, it helps me think better.
