If adoptive parents are concerned about what the birth mom is doing, that she is either drinking, using drugs, smoking, not going for prenatal care, or doing other things that are compromising her pregnancy. I suggest that they first talk to their adoption professional and explore whether their concerns are valid. If their concerns are value, they can ask the mother to go for testing. There is drug and alcohol testing. They can ask the mother to go for prenatal care. The adoptive parents can learn about the risks attendant to prenatal drug use, alcohol use or cigarette use and make a decision as to whether or not they want to proceed with the adoption. Adoptive parents don't have to stay with any situation that they are not comfortable with. If a situation is not comfortable for them, then they do have the right to back out of it and pursue and adoption with somebody that is a better candidate for them.
