So, if your child is arrested for one of the less serious offenses, a minor in possession of alcohol, small amounts of marijuana, graffiti, a curfew violation, tobacco; things of that nature, most of the time that is going to be dealt with, without them having to appear in court with formal legal proceedings. And often there is a diversion program that's available, where you will meet with your child with a probation officer, even though they are not on probation, and they will be told to stay out of trouble for some period of time; 6 months, 9 months or a year. They may be asked to perform some community service, and the probation officer will want to hear from you as the parent to make sure that they are behaving in the house; that they are going to school and obtaining adequate grades. And as long as they are able to follow those rules and guidelines, ultimately the case against them should be dismissed.
