Our country is leading in teen pregnancy, STDs and abortion. And while researchers don't know the exact reasons for why this is, what they can tell us is that teens in the United States are having sex at younger ages, they're having sex with more partners, and they're having less protected sex. So what parents can do to protect your children from these outcomes is first, to talk to them about sex early and often. Your children need to be informed. Don't rely on what they're learning at school. And also talking about your values around sex and why you have those values will mean a lot to your children; that's something they can't get from sexuality education. And lastly, one of the things you can do is talk to them about their plans for their future, to help them make concrete what it is they want for themselves, and to raise questions that make them think about how their life might be different if they were to get pregnant as a teenager or if they were to contract the HIV virus.
