We know that belly breathing can be soothing to our nervous systems, so what a great gift to be able to give our children from an early age. When I'm teaching a young child about belly breathing, I often use a rubber duck or a small stuffed animal. I invite the child to lay on the floor and place the duck or the stuffed animal on their belly, and encourage them to begin to breath into their tummy, creating gentle waves for the duck to ride on. This is a great thing to introduce to a child when they are in a receptive mood. Then, when times get tough and they get stressed about something, you can ask them if they would like to try some belly breathing with their duck or favorite stuffed animal.
