There are two main causes for fires in the home. Usually, it can start from a stove from cooking or from someone who smokes in the home.
You want to keep your stove as clean as possible. One of the main causes is food particles in grease, so you want to have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen, not necessarily right next to your stove, but handy and you need to know how to use it.
You need to have smoke detectors in your home. You need to check the batteries and replace them at least two times a year.
You need to have an escape plan from every room in your house in case there is a fire. You can have it for upstairs – you need to have a fire escape ladder, and you need to also with your older children make a plan where you’re going to meet them outside the home should there be a fire.
If you are a smoker, never smoke in bed. Use child resistant lighters. And that is one way really to ensure that your home is fire safe.
