Reactive Attachment Disorder is a diagnosis that adopted kids get sometimes, very often, foreign adopted babies. It's a constellation of symptoms: Hyper controlling, oppositional. I was asked to sit on an RAD panel one time at an adoption conference. Reactive Attachment Disorder is not really my area of expertise, so I wanted something intelligent to say on the panel. I said, "I think we ought to re-name it. Normal Organismic Response to Massive Abandonment or Loss." The acronym for that is "normal." What we want to do and how to respond to it, is you keep in mind what the experiences your child has had and if they make sense. If you are ripped away from everything you've ever know, you are going to be controlling. Then you put certain things into place like high structure, high nurture; you really give a lot of structure to their life. There are many things you can do.
